Beauty and Wellness Business Books Cleanup
Four blank lines labeled hours, price, clients, and who buys the color

Beauty and Wellness Business Books Cleanup Which form fits the person in the room

A stylist asked which form her Friday envelope belongs on. A license hanging by the shampoo bowl does not tell us whether that envelope is rent, wages, or a sale. The working deal does.

Bring the facts

Four questions before a form

We ask who sets the hours, who sets the price, whose clients they are, and who buys the color. A person who works your hours, at your prices, on your clients, with your product, looks like an employee, and the wage record is the form. A person who rents space, sets their own book, buys their own product, and pays you for the room looks like someone whose payment to you is rent. The facts can be mixed. A mixed set of facts is named as mixed. We do not choose the cheaper form and hope the year goes quietly.

Chair rent the business receives is still rent income even while classification is unsettled. Do not park it in service sales to avoid the question. The rent page is rent received.

The information-return thresholds move by year

For 2026, nonemployee compensation is tested against $2,000 in the 1099-NEC instructions. The 2025 test for that same kind of payment was $600. Public Law 119-21, at section 70433, is the change that set the 2026 test. Rent you pay someone else follows the rent-box instructions for that year. Do not borrow the compensation box from memory.

Getting the box wrong and getting the classification wrong are two mistakes. Fixing the form without looking at hours, price, clients, and product only fixes the box.
